Police harass high school anti-Bernardi protesters

Police have executed search warrants on at least two students involved in the 17 March protest at Cory Bernardi’s Adelaide office.

One of them, a high school student, was accosted by police at her home on Saturday 2 April. The officers confiscated clothing they alleged she wore on the day, and demanded a DNA sample. They then informed her she would be charged with “property damage” and “disorderly conduct”.

Police confronted her with supposedly incriminating photos from the day, which consisted of images of her holding placards and writing a message with chalk.

Despite hysterical claims in the right wing media, the simple fact is the student protest was entirely peaceful. None of the “evidence” produced by police indicates any violence or threats against anyone.

The high school student told Red Flag: “We shouted and protested; there was nothing violent. We weren’t rude to the cops.

“The claim we ‘intimidated’ staff is a joke. Throughout the protest they were laughing and filming us from the office. There wasn’t any threat, I wasn’t intimidating anyone.”

Young people are regularly castigated for being apathetic and uninterested in politics. But when they do stand up for their rights and voice an opinion, this is the treatment they get.
